Player demand results in last-minute expansion before Oct. 11 fall-winter start

The Minutemen – a new team started by veteran local box players – will join the Boston Box Lacrosse League for the fall-winter 2016-17 season, adding more than 20 players and a competitive fifth squad to New England’s home for real box lacrosse.

The BBLL played with five teams a year ago, but when one of those teams announced it would not return, most of its top players were re-distributed to existing teams around the league. There was enough demand from quality new players, however, that BBLL veterans Ryan Conwell and Rich Bernasconi were able to organize the Minutemen.

“This is a demanding league and we want every game to be competitive,” said BBLL founder Randy Fraser. “While any new team coming into the league faces a tall order when it comes to beating the established squads – especially so this year when it appears that every returning team has beefed up its roster – we would not have allowed for expansion if we felt a new team would mean a walk-over every week. The Minutemen face a tall task, no question, but they’re excited to play and we’re excited to have them.”

The Minutemen feature a few displaced veterans from other squads, but also have players with Vermont Voyageurs and Major League Lacrosse experience, as well as a host of exciting new players who were hoping to get a roster spot in the league.

“Demand from players has never been higher, Fraser added, “and Ryan and Rich did a good job learning about who was available and building a team. They deserve a lot of credit for this.”

The addition of a fifth team forces the league to change its entire schedule, so that the Minutemen – who get a first week bye – can start their season on Oct. 18. The additional team means that the BBLL regular season will extend until the end of January, with the playoffs and championships being held the first two weeks of February.

The league opens on Tuesday, Oct. 11 with the returning teams squaring off. The defending-champion Blazers meet the MegaWhales in the opener, followed by Bullseye versus PrimeTime.

Games are at 9 and 10 p.m. each week, with vacations on Dec. 20 and 27, when the league hosts holiday pick-up play. The revised schedule and team rosters will be available on; once games start, standings and statistics will be updated weekly.

Players hoping to find a team to play for should inquire at; while few if any roster spots are open as the season begins, there are times when roster spots open as the season progresses,

The Boston Box Lacrosse League is New England’s home for real box lacrosse. The league plays under National Lacrosse League rules, with slight modifications, and is a member of US Indoor Lacrosse. The league began play in 2011; it is entering its third year hosting games in Hingham. More information – including standings and statistics during the season -- can be found at

The league posts announcements on Twitter and can be followed @BostonBoxLax.

South Shore Sports Center is located at 55 Recreation Park Drive in Hingham; fans and friends can watch games from the arena seating or at the Skybox Lounge, where food and drinks are served. Information is available at
