Opening-night losers have their revenge in first rematch

Will Jennings scored 10 goals – outscoring the defending-champion Blazers by himself – and Kyle Denhoff added four goals and two assists as the Minutemen avenged a one-goal opening-night loss with a 22-9 blowout in Boston Box Lacrosse League action on Nov. 13 at South Shore Sports Center in Hingham, Mass.

In the nightcap, the MegaWhales also reversed their opening-night fortunes, taking down PrimeTime in a 10-9 nail-biter that further shook up the BBLL standings.

In the opener, the Minutemen used a deep bench to overwhelm the shorthanded Blazers, racing off to a 12-4 halftime lead and never allowing the Blazers to get into one of the scoring runs that the team is known for. Jennings added one assist to his 10 scores to lead the way – and netted those goals with just 14 shots on net – but Kyle Denhoff added four goals and two assists, Rob Murray had five helpers to go with three caused turnovers and nine loose balls and Pat O’Loughlin, Dave Saccoci and Ryan Murphy all contributed multi-point nights to lead a balanced Minuteman attack.

The win means the teams have split their first-two regular-season meetings, meaning the third match-up – scheduled for early January – will go a long way to deciding playoff seedings and tiebreakers.

The same can be said for the MegaWhales and PrimeTime in the nightcap, as the MegaWhales rode hat tricks from Mike Maggio, Greg Melaugh and Sam Houston-Read to their first win of the season. Dan Hettler picked up 3 assists, his brother Chris made 26 saves and added a key assist on a floor-length pass to Melaugh for the goal that gave the MegaWhales their first lead of the game.

Kenny Keirstead lead Prime Time with four goals, with Henry Archie adding a hat trick and Brendan Grand two goals and an assist to lead PrimeTime. Alex Bunick added three assists.

The games significantly tightened the standings, leaving the Minutemen and PrimeTime tied for third place, a game behind the Blazers and one ahead of the MegaWhales.

The Minutemen get the chance for another statement win Nov. 20, when they face off with first-place Bullseye. That game follows the Blazers playing against PrimeTime at 9 p.m.
